YALLINGUP SURF FILM FESTIVAL WINNERS

Sea of Darkness has won the Best Feature Film Award at the inaugural Yallingup Surfilm Festival. This gritty documentary tells the compelling story of early surf explorer Mike Boyum  and the tangled web of drug trafficking and hair-raising adventure that characterised his travels. Directed by Mike Oblowitz, Sea of Darkness has already taken out the New York Surf Film Festival and has been wowing audiences around the world. It also recently screened at X-Dance, as part of the Sundance Film Festival.

Boyum has been a shadowy legend of surfing folklore for years but Sea of Darkness uncovers his intriguing story in vivid detail. From the early days of pioneering the famed wave of Grajagan in Indonesia, Boyum’s tale grows ever darker and more twisted.
The central theme is the extreme lengths Boyum and others went to in order to fund their surfing lifestyles. At the core of the film is the fork in the road many surfers of this generation arrived at – whether to go down the dark road of drugs and crime to support their travels, or whether to go into legitimate businesses.

Best Short Film was won by Tom’s Creation Plantation, directed by Cyrus Sutton. This fascinating documentary tells the story of surfboard builder Tom Wegener and his revival of the ancient Hawaiian surfcraft, the Alaia. These traditional timber boards have found favour with a new generation of surfers, discovering  their incredible powers of speed and glide.
“It’s a big surprise to win an award like this for a film that literally cost $600 to make. It’s really a testament to Tom’s charisma and creativity,” Cyrus Sutton said, from his home in California.

Wegener builds his boards in a totally sustainable, environmentally friendly way, out of locally grown Palownia timber, grown on his property near Noosa Heads. Timber shavings from the hand-crafting of his boards are returned to the garden as mulch and compost.
Wegener’s revival of the alaia has sparked a world-wide movement, inspiring surfers from around Australia, California, Hawaii and beyond to re-discover this time-forgotten surf craft.

The Yallingup Surfilm Festival Awards were judged by an eminent panel of surfing film-makers, writers and respected elders. In its first year, YSF attracted more than 30 entries from afar afield as Uruguay, the US and all over Australia. The festival was attended by well over 2000 patrons.

YSF is extremely thankful to all its sponsors, supporters , donors and volunteers for all their tremendous support. Founding Festival Director Jesca Maas says “ This event has been such a overwhelming success due to the solid and wonderful support of all sponsors, donors, supporters and volunteers, as well as the local surfing community as well as the team at SurfAid International. My heartfelt thanks go out to one and all.”
